Harold Sakata was a man of many talents – from Olympic weightlifting champion to professional wrestler to prolific character actor. Though he's perhaps best known for his memorable turn as the imposing villain Oddjob in the James Bond classic Goldfinger, Sakata's acting career spanned a wide range of films, showcasing his versatility and commanding screen presence. Hailing from Hawaii, Sakata first found fame as a world-class weightlifter, winning a silver medal at the 1948 London Olympics. He later transitioned to professional wrestling, performing under the moniker "Tosh Togo" and becoming a fixture in the National Wrestling Alliance. But it was his transition to acting in the 1970s that truly cemented Sakata's legacy, with roles in a diverse array of genre films – from the shark thriller Mako: The Jaws of Death to the martial arts cult classic Bruce Strikes Back. Sakata's most iconic role, of course, remains Oddjob, the fearsome henchman to Goldfinger in the 1964 Bond film. With his towering stature, steely gaze, and deadly steel-rimmed hat, Sakata's Oddjob proved a formidable adversary for Sean Connery's 007, leaving an indelible mark on one of the most beloved entries in the long-running spy franchise. Though Sakata's acting career was relatively brief, his distinctive presence and memorable performances have endured, making him a true cult figure in the annals of cinematic history.
